The Family Behind the Business

Who we are...

We are Sam and Hannah, the sister duo behind Verso L'alto Coffee Roasters. Sam is the founder and roaster of Verso L'alto and Hannah, her Husband Johnny and 5 kids, are happy partners - all working together to grow this dream into a business.

2018

Sam and Hannah are midwest transplants living the California dream. They love immersing themselves in the natural beauty that CA has to offer and their hobbies reflect an accurate blend of their California vibes and Midwest roots. Embracing a holistic lifesyle through fermented foods, bread making, and kombucha finding leisure in coffee moments, and outdoor activities like hiking, gardening, pottery, and beaching.

They started home roasting in 2018 on a small air popper and fell in love with the craft, often giving away sample bags of the coffee as gifts - there was so much interest sparked through these gifts that the Verso L’alto Coffee Business was born!

2020

In August 2020 when the coffee hobby turned into a business venture, they bought a 1.5 kg Mill City Roaster - during the fall of 2020 Sam trained on a 12.5kg San Francisco coffee roaster with Eddie the head roaster at Soul Grind Cafe in Pacifica, CA.

Like any trade coffee roasting is a combination of technical skills and craftsmanship. The concept of doing a trade is rare in our culture and it is important to invest one's time into a hobby. Sam has always loved making things with her hands and being able to express nature in a tangible way. Coffee roasting isn’t just a job, it's about enjoying the end product and sharing it with others - it's one of the many hobbies that Sam has weaved into a lifestyle.

and onward....

Our family business is ordered toward fresh roasted coffee for a well grounded life. We enjoy the aspects of fresh coffee as well as building community around the brand and the coffee moments we have been able to share with others.
